Usually yes - animal sounds, droppings, or a foul smell from the firebox point to an animal or nest in the flue. We confirm the species, remove it, sanitize, and cap. Don't light a fire until it's cleared and inspected.

We don't work an active wasp colony until it's treated. Once the colony is dealt with, we sweep and sanitize the contaminated flue and install a screened cap to seal the entry point.

A properly sized, properly screened cap is the number-one defense - it's the most common entry point we seal after an animal removal. We confirm the fit on the visit and pair it with the sweep so the system is both clean and protected.

Don't light it cold. Years of disuse means animals may have moved in, the cap or crown may have failed, the damper may be seized, and old creosote can have hardened. Book the $89 inspection first - we'll tell you exactly what condition the system is in, and the fee credits toward anything we fix in New Franklin.
